Where the money goes
A safari quote has four lines, and only one of them is genuinely negotiable.
- Park fees. Charged per person per day, and among the highest in Africa. Ngorongoro adds a vehicle fee on top to descend into the crater. They are identical for every agency: nobody can undercut anybody here.
- Accommodation. The line that varies most. Between a simple camp and a luxury lodge there can be four or five times the difference per night.
- Vehicle, fuel and guide. Shared across the passengers, so the per-person cost drops sharply the more of you there are.
- The operator's margin. The only thing that genuinely changes between booking on the ground and booking through a European or American agency, which adds its commission on top of all of the above.
Why booking with a local operator costs less
When you book through an agency at home, that agency has no vehicles and no guides in Tanzania: it subcontracts a local operator. The safari is run by the same kind of people; what changes is that there is a middleman’s commission on top.
Booking directly with the person who will drive the vehicle removes that step. It is exactly the difference we are talking about, and it is real: the same trip can cost considerably less.
The three budget levels

The number of people changes the sums a lot. The vehicle and the guide cost the same with two passengers as with six, so the per-person price of a private safari drops considerably from four upwards.
Where you can genuinely save
- Travel outside July and August: the same accommodation costs considerably less.
- Go as a group of four or more: the vehicle and guide cost is shared.
- Drop a level of accommodation and add a day: more time in the savannah for the same money.
- Book directly with a local operator, without a middleman’s commission.
- Remove a park and gain nights in the ones that are left: you save on fees and you see more.
Where it does not pay to save is on the guide. On a safari, who drives the vehicle is the difference between seeing lions and driving in circles.
